Chris Buttars Is Driving Me Crazy

I don’t like politics. I love current events, I fulfill my civic duties, but I really don’t like politics. You see, politics are full of hate. I’m not a big fan of reckless hate. (Or really any hate. I’m not crazy about the girl sitting next to me in the computer lab right now, humming like a maniac and picking her scabs. But we haven’t gotten to hate yet.)

All that being said, Chris Buttars is driving me CRAZY! If you find yourself unaware of who he is, Google 'bigot." You might actually get his name to come up. He is a Utah state senator, representing West Jordan. He is controversial due to several racist remarks and even more offensive remarks about homosexuals. In this latest controversy, he likened gays to terrorists and proclaimed them to be America's greatest threat. He also likes to bring up the fact that he was an LDS bishop a lot and that kind of rubs me the wrong way.

Let's clarify something- Me. I'm a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am politically moderate. I used to just say that to sound cool, but I really have turned out that way in adulthood. I am not a bigot, except possibly towards Chris Buttars himself and maybe the scab-picking girl. I'm a Pisces. I like burnt popcorn. I happen to know and dearly love people who Chris Buttars targets. That's me in a nutshell.

I am offended by Senator Buttars for several reasons:

  1. He's wrong.
  2. He's so so wrong! He said he believed Brown vs. Board of Education to be wrong. That's crazy.
  3. He makes known his church membership at the same time he makes remarks like this.
  4. I don't believe that he should be using the church for personal political gain.
  5. His latest remarks were to a gay documentary filmmaker. Good thinking.
  6. He perpetuates stereotypes of Utahns and Mormons.

Readers, if you happen to not be LDS, please don't put Chris Buttars in a Mormon guidebook. This man does not represent us. (If he does in fact represent you, please stop being racist.)

Shame on Chris Buttars for his attitude towards his fellow man. But also, shame on anyone who can't separate this man from Utahns and Mormons. That's being almost as blind as he is. Almost.

Shame on me for talking about politics. Shame on me for wasting my time on Chris Buttars. I'll try to be more delightful next time.

Thank you for sharing, I am not from Church of LDS so I appreciate how you educate others (especially me.) Without you I would not even know who Chris Buttars is....sad but true.

I can't figure out how Chris Buttars can in good conscience drag the LDS church into this, since both his uncharitable treatment of other children of God and his postition on civil unions is the opposite of what the Church has stated.

All I have to say is DITTO! I may be a little more liberal than moderate, and I don't like burnt popcorn, but yeah. I just want to know who continues to elect this bafoon?

Thank you for writing about him! He angers me also! I don't understand how some people can preach so much about loving everyone and then be so hateful towards groups of people. I don't like burnt popcorn though. haha.
